This type of knife goes by many names that can include mezzaluna, ulu, chopper, or rocker knife. This one was bought as a set that included the mezzaluna knife and the round cutting board, but currently these two products only seem to be available separately.

Product Review by Mary: (meet our team)

Curved Knife:

  • Easy to clean, use, and store. Comes with a blade cover that slides on and off (doesn’t require much grip strength)
  • Plastic handle is smooth and worked well despite being designed for larger hands than mine
  • Good for both side-to-side rocking and vertical chopping motions, depending on what you’re cutting and how your wrists are feeling
  • The curve of the blade means a certain stability is required of whatever you’re cutting. This means it’s a great knife for dicing up chunks of onion, for example, but less so for chopping a whole onion into chunks. Best for cutting medium/small things into small/tiny things.
  • Being able to quickly pivot directions with minimal movement or effort increased my speed in dicing/mincing up things like garlic, herbs, and spinach
  • Can be sharpened with a standard knife sharpener (not included)

 Cutting board:

  • Not heavy yet reliably stable. I used it directly on a wooden table and wasn’t worried about it moving or having to hold it still. If you wanted to, you could easily further increase the stability by using it on a rubber mat or similar surface.
  • Because the curve of the board is designed to exactly fit that of the knife, it’s very convenient for scraping things back into the middle. However, because it’s quite small, you have to do quite a bit of scraping to prevent food from falling off the edge. You can achieve a similar effect with a mixing bowl, and have less risk of dropping food.
  • Note about storage: my other cutting boards are all rectangular and stored on their sides in a cupboard. This cutting board, being round, has a tendency to roll. It wasn’t hard to figure out a solution, just something to keep in mind.
